In case you were unaware, one of the most intense rivalries in college football was renewed last Saturday in Auburn, Alabama. Alabama paid a visit to the Loveliest Village on the Plains, their 38 million dollar coach in tow, ![]()
and promptly were defeated 17-10.That is six in a row. ![]()
Two years ago after the fourth consecutive defeat for Bama, the phrase “Fear the Thumb” was coined and got a lot of press. ![]()
Last year, after AU beat Bama in Tuscaloosa (AU is undefeated in T-Town) and the thumb was added, the cheer became “Fear the Other Hand.” Well, we have indeed moved over to the other hand!
But what is next? I am confused. Did we start the second hand with the pinkie or the thumb? If the thumb, then the index finger is next. “Fear the Index Finger” just doesn’t feel right.
Or, if we started with the pinkie, “Fear the Ring Finger” doesn’t do it either.
No, I think that the first hand probably started with an index finger anyway, since we ended up on the thumb. That would make the holding up of four fingers after the fourth victory most probably and is what led to the thumb being for number five.
So, assuming we would now hold up one hand with all five digits displayed and the other hand with the index finger extended, I am hereby starting a campaign for AU fans to unite behind the “Fear the Middle Finger” promotion!
Now I am not naive. I realize that the middle finger has another connotation. I got in trouble for it in high school. You see, a bunch of us on the football team (and some in our group class picture) prominently displayed our middle fingers to the exclusion of the rest of our digits. We were amazed and shocked when there arose an uproar from the administration, especially the football coach.
When we were all called into the office, we explained that we believed that the middle finger extended was a symbol for the phrase “Keep on Truckin’.” Coach did not believe us, but we all stuck to our story.
So, I would not want Bama fans to misconstrue the middle finger as something unintended. It does not refer to “Keep on Truckin’,” unless you mean for AU to keep on truckin’ to victories!
Anyway, if you are not an AU fan, or even an SEC fan, I am surprised you are still here. But, I am glad you are. You probably won’t understand all this hated rivalry stuff. How could you? It’s an Alabama thing.
But I can tell you this, or as we like to say down south, “I tell you what,” beating Bama six in a row is so sweet.
If you are an Alabama fan and somehow stumbled onto this blog, go ahead and vent. Get it out of your system. You just can’t live with this stuff (losing to Auburn six in a row) all year. After all, if you don’t get it out now, next year, after we beat you guys again in T-Town, more pain and anguish will be heaped on top of this year’s pain. That is not good for you.
So, I say, “Fear the Middle Finger” Bama. But, don’t take it wrong. Really. We don’t mean that other thing–about trucking.

Great post Dad, and that is one campaign slogan that I’m SURE thousands of AU fans will gladly endorse. What will the t-shirts look like? The bumper stickers? 6 in a row…go Tommy T…..War Eagle!
Leslie
PS- I am a little sad for cousin Lindsay though….must be hard to be the ONLY one in the family at AL. I’d love to be a fly on the wall at next Sunday’s lunch.

Gina, thanks for posting. Maybe I really should have said, “Ah tell you what!”
Hey, no worry. Tennessee will be in a bowl. They are playing really lately. And, yes I think Ole Miss got a great coach.
Stop in again anytime

Dad, great post! “Fear the middle finger” has a nice ring to it. I’m sure fraternities and sororities will be making shirts in no time. Now I’m going to go tell Molly Boggs to read this….she’s a Bama fan.

Poor Molly.

I like how someone in the marketing department at Auburn decided “War Eagle!” wasn’t emphatic enough, so they needed to add a qualifier, and thus “War D— Eagle!”

Looks like we gave you all the “Middle Finger” this year!
Nothing like a good ole rivalry!

Erin, you gave us the middle finger, the rest of the fingers and the whole fist!
Rivalries are good and fun, when kept in perspective.
Congrats on a great win and season.
