We continue with Dick Lucas’ sermons on Acts 17:16-34. The first sermon may be found here.

This sermon is titled Preaching to Pagans-The Glorious Theme and includes the following quotes:

Paul did not preach about social ethics or

the secret of a happy life. These things have their

place but, particularly when preaching to non-

Christians, they are not fundamental. The vital

thing is to introduce people to God.

It is sad but true that many of our churches seem

to have lost the courage to tell people about the

one thing which really matters. Paul told the people

about God the Creator and His purposes (vv.2

Liberal theology always begins with man- man

searching for God, man wondering if there is any

purpose in the universe, and so on. The Bible, on

the other hand, begins with God- “In the beginning,

God “ (Genesis 1:1), and when Paul tells his

hearers about the only true God, he takes the same

line- (v.24) “The God who made the world…” We

believe it is impossible to tell people about God

without first building endless bridges, getting to

know people, skirting the subject, but the New

Testament is completely God-centred.

and

It is essential that we teach the Biblical doctrine

of God, for that is where man’s problems

lie. The God the Bible presents to us is indignant

about sin; He is a God who judges, who

holds us responsible for our actions. It is not

the small differences between Christians that

are at stake, but the very nature of the knowledge

of God. Do we preach about God or

about religion? “God and God alone is man’s

highest good. He is the Creator and Sustainer

of all things… All creatures owe their very

existence to Him.” If we do not discover who

God really is, we will have missed the whole

point of our existence.
